According to nutritional professionals, the omega 3 deficiency is reaching epic proportions in the Western world. Judging from the explosion of the number of fish oil supplements, it would seem that consumers are becoming more aware of the need to get some good omega 3 sources into their diets.

There are numerous sources of these essential fatty acids. We will discuss some of them but keep in mind that the best omega 3 sources are ones that your body can use directly – no conversion process is needed. We will get back to this later.

Direct sources include:

fatty fish: mackerel, sea bass, salmon, halibut, hoki. sardines, shellfish [less pollutants but also a lot fewer nutrients].
various nuts like walnuts, peanuts or almonds.
leafy greens like spinach.
olive oil – avoid the others like corn oil, safflower oil and most vegetable oils – the omega6 family in these oils is not something you need or want.
grass fed meat like beef, mutton or pork – if they are grain fed [most of them are] they are not good sources of omega 3s.

I alluded to this earlier when I mentioned the conversion process. There are vegetable omega 3 sources like flax seeds but these are not very efficient.

Bear with me a moment – I am about to bore you. The two most important omega3s [out of eight total] are called are called DHA and EPA. Our body latches onto these two acids like desert sand absorbs water. The flax seed problem is that it has a fatty acid called ALA. It must be converted to DHA and EPA – a process that becomes increasingly difficult with age or even bad health. Educated consumers prefer to skip this middleman.

Practically speaking, the best sources of omega 3s are fatty fish. It is unlikely you will get anywhere close to what you need with anything else. Unfortunately, the FDA among others warns against eating too much seafood because of the toxins that accumulate in the fatty parts of the fish. The ocean pollution that has caused this problem is not going away any time soon.

The answer to what are the best omega 3 sources is actually simple. Fish oil supplements. Quality products use a process called molecular distillation to separate out the contaminants. This allows you to get a lot of nutrients concentrated into one safe soft gel capsule. Also. Get a product that has more DHA than EPA. Your body will like the molecular chemistry better.
